Full guide for An Untitled Story (all hearts, flowers, abilities, etc.) by Targeted « on: January 19, 2008, 01:18:00 PM »

Hope you like it!

This is a complete guide for An Untitled Story. General tips, heart locations, ability locations, flower locations, tips on some of the harder bosses. Don’t read it unless you are stuck and want a full answer! I’ve even included a suggestion of what order to do the areas in (although I wouldn’t recommend referring to that unless you’re desperate – exploration is what makes the game fun!).

I did not include any tips for particularly difficult platforming sections, because the tip there is pretty much always "keep trying."

NOTE: All locations are given relative to the save point I think you’ll be coming from when getting that heart/ability. It’s always listed left/right first, then up/down. It has nothing to do with what direction you actually go to reach that screen.

While I’ve run the game on three different difficulties, I made this guide while doing a Simple runthrough (for speed). So please let me know if I have forgotten any areas where there are extra heart gates on higher difficulties, or differences in boss fights (or any other errors).

GENERAL TIPS

  • To get back to the Grotto save point from Deepdive, shoot ice at fish to turn them into platforms you can jump on.
  • To get to Skysand, jump left from the top of Nightclimb. Shoot ice at the flame to freeze it, then shoot again to break it. Go two screens left to see the save point, but you can’t get to it. Go back to another save point and teleport there.
  • If you’re having trouble with the treasure box puzzles, remember that they all have more than one solution, and generally there is an easy way to do it if you’re willing to fiddle with the blocks and do it the long way.
  • To get to Cloudrun, go two screens down from the left Farfall save point, stick slide to the balloons, and use them to get to the left passage. Drop down. When you see a cloud on the right side, go towards the cloud.
  • To get to Mountside, go to the warp cave one screen to the right and one screen up from the first save point in the Grotto. Go into the second warp.
  • To get to the Dark Grotto, go two screens to the right and two screens up from the first Grotto save point, or two screens down from the first Curtain save point. Notice that under the awning some of the ground looks cracked. Dive bomb it.
  • To get to the upper part of Nightwalk, go to the second save point in The Curtain. Jump off of the left side and keep holding left. Eventually you’ll see it; it’s seven screens down and six screens to the left.
  • To start the Ghostly Flower quest, go five screens left of the upper save point in Nightwalk. Over on the left wall, there are some invisible blocks to stand on if you jump up. Keep climbing, it’s six screens up. Talk to the man.
  • Red/Blue button puzzle six screens to the right and one screen up from the second Icecastle save point: First hit the left button to make the blocks blue. Then the middle button to make them red. Then the top middle button to make them blue. Get on the blue blocks and walk right through a secret passage. You can figure it out from there I hope!
  • Keep Going? JumpBox? Video games?: Go one screen to the left and one screen down from the first Sky Town save point. Go to the bottom and then go left one screen. You can buy a house by talking to this guy. Then go back, up, and to the left again. You can buy furnishings for your house. Keep buying things until the arcade machines and the “unusable machine” show up. Those are your video games. Buy them, then go down to your house to use them. You get a heart for beating the high score. Buying the other items gives you nothing except novelty value, even if you buy them all.
  • Only want vague hints for the hearts so you can figure them out for yourself? Go to the rightmost Skylands save point (one screen to the right and three screens down from the fourth Icecastle save point) and talk to the glowing ball. It will give you cryptic hints for a fee.
  • Tired of looking all birdy? Go one screen right and three screens down from the left Skylands save point (or one screen left and seven screens down from the fourth Icecastle save point) for a costume shop. You can look like an egg again, like Ogmo from the Jumper series, or like a ninja.
  • If you have version 1.10 or 1.11 you can visit some new places. To get to StrangeCastle, go one screen right and one screen down from the lower save point of FarFall. Do not go through the teleport. Keep going right and you will go through an invisible passageway to StrangeCastle. To get to UnderTomb, go three screens right of the LongBeach save point. Near the right of the screen keep divebombing in random places and you will uncover the passage to UnderTomb. Fall down the passageway.

Two screens to the right of the first save point in Stonecastle. Avoid the rocks he throws and when he smashes down, jump on his head. Repeat three more times. TIPS: There is a short break between volleys of rocks. Use that to change direction.

  • ColdBlob: Coldkeep

Two screens to the left and two screens up from the first save point in Nightwalk. Avoid him and the rocks he throws and then shoot him. Repeat two more times. Then he will stick to the ceiling and rain down rocks. Avoid these and shoot him again.

  • NightSpirit: Nightclimb

Three screens up from the first save point in Nightclimb. Avoid him and either avoid or jump on the small ghosts he lets out. When he stops on the left side of the platform, either shoot or jump on him. Repeat three more times.

  • GrottoEye: Grotto

Two screens down from the first save point in Grotto. Avoid his lasers and dive bomb him when he jumps up. Repeat two more times, then he rises out of the water. Avoid his lasers and him, and then dive bomb him when he turns yellow. TIPS: This guy is aggravating for me, as he’s hard to aim for while he’s jumping. Walk along directly above him instead of trying to judge where he will appear. This makes things easier.

  • FireMachine: Firecage

Five screens to the right of the first save point in Firecage. Avoid the rotating lasers. When red energy appears, jump up and divebomb him. TIPS: The third laser that appears can be avoided by just standing directly beneath him. The fourth that appears can be avoided by standing directly beneath him and moving a little to adjust for timing. So, try to avoid having the stray balls of fire heading straight down while in the second half of the fight.

  • SkyMummy: Skysand

One screen to the right and four screens up from the second save point in Skysand. Avoid the sword and the rocks thrown out. When the sword stops, notice that it tracks you. Make it shoot at the ghost. Repeat three more times. After winning, go one screen up to receive a gold orb. TIPS: The sword can be hard to aim, but don’t get discouraged. Rocks are fairly easy to dodge on the easier difficulties, so don’t be afraid to get in the way of the sword and take some damage if it means you’ve aimed correctly.

  • FarBall: Farfall

One screen to the right and five screens down from the left Farfall save point. Note that crossing the screen three screens below the save point is much easier with the stick slide ability. Jump on him to split him into two smaller pieces. Repeat until the pieces are small enough that they die instead of splitting (the number of times changes with difficulty level). Kill all the pieces. TIPS: Try to stay in the air. Grabbing a corner and jumping on everything that comes makes the boss easier. If you’re having trouble jumping high enough to hit him the first time without getting hurt, try sticking to the ceiling until he jumps over to you, then drop down.

  • Fluffy: Cloudrun

One screen to the right of the third Cloudrun save point. Dodge the bullets while not letting the platforms dip too low, dodge his attacks, and then jump up the rockets to hit him on the flashing light on his belly. Repeat three more times. After winning go to the right one screen to get a gold orb. TIPS: This is one of the harder bosses. It can be hard to dodge his flying at you. Try jumping to one side as he approaches, and then double-jump in the other direction at the last second. If you’re having a lot of trouble, get a lot of heart upgrades and if you can’t dodge him hit the ground first, since it deals less damage than he does and protects you for a second.

  • StoneEye: Stonecastle

Three screens to the right and one screen up from the first Stonecastle save point. Avoid the lasers and when the yellow energy appears, jump up and dive bomb the eye. Repeat three more times. TIPS: Ducking in a corner can avoid the majority of his attacks. Just be prepared to jump out of the way for the few that can hit you, or for the low spreading lasers.

  • BlancBlock: Blancland

Three screens to the right and one screen up from the third Blancland save point. He will start slamming into the walls. Avoid him. On all difficulties aside from Simple, spikes will begin to rain from the ceiling above where you are. Avoid these too. When he slides on the floor, wait until he turns white and jump on him. Repeat three more times. When you win go one screen to the left to get a gold orb.

  • DeepDragon: Deepdive

Three screens to the right and six screens down from the first save point in the Grotto. Get into the ship by jumping on top of it. Avoid his ice shots and mouth laser. When he’s not shooting, one of his sections is vulnerable. Dive bomb it. Repeat three more times. After winning, go one screen to the right to get a gold orb. TIPS: You can avoid both the ice shots and the mouth laser by jumping up to the ceiling and stick sliding all the way to the right. This makes it hard to jump to the vulnerable section in time, though, so work out the timing to get back to the ground so you can jump. Make sure to press up as you dive bomb him so you can get enough height to get back without getting hurt.

  • DarkRed: Dark Grotto

One screen to the right and two screens down from the top Dark Grotto save point. Light all four torches to get him to appear. Avoid him and his fireballs. When he charges up a big fireball, shoot ice at it to redirect it to him. Repeat three times. Depending on your difficulty, he will shoot back the fireball and you’ll need to shoot ice at it again (or a third time). Once you win, use the energy to get the gold orb. TIPS: When he shoots back the fireball at you and you need to ice it a second/third time, he needs to be standing on the far right or left and you need to be standing as far away as possible to get charge time. So, memorize the number of jumps he does after getting hit each time (he switches between an odd and even number of jumps) and make him jump to one of the outside ledges by jumping to the middle before his first jump if he’s going an even number of times.

  • TheNinja: The Curtain

Two screens to the right and five screens up from the first Curtain save point. Dodge his ninja stars. When he stops for a breather, shoot him or jump on him. Repeat three more times. When you win, go one screen to the right for a gold orb. TIPS: This guy is pretty predictable and easy, and is aggravating mostly because of the seven platforming screens to go through before getting to him each time you die. Memorize his pattern and you’re set.

  • IceBall: Icecastle

One screen to the left and one screen down from the third Icecastle save point. Dodge his thrusts and the rocks, and then jump on him when he turns red and stops. When you win go left one screen to get a gold orb.

  • BlackNinja: Final Climb

Through a warp from one screen above the final Blackcastle save point. You’ve seen this guy before. This time he aims the ninja stars at you and appears from lots of different locations. Dodge them, then shoot him when he takes a breather. TIPS: Just plain jumping over one, under the next works pretty well here. Vary it up for when he appears directly above or below you.

  • FINAL BOSS(es): Final Climb

One screen above the final Final Climb save. The boss has several stages. Stage 1: Wizard above you throwing slow-moving homing balls. Dodge these. When the wizard charges up, try to stand directly beneath him, then when he shoot move out of the way and it will reflect back up at him. Repeat a number of times depending on difficulty. Stage 2: Red energy appears and the floor goes away. Keep in the air while avoiding the rings and any bars they make. When they turn white, shoot or jump on them. The number of hits it takes depends on difficulty. Stage 3: The floor is back. A walking… thing is pacing back and forth, shooting lasers and those white balls at you. Occasionally it will open up with a sweeping laser. Dodge all this and when it stops in the middle and turns white, dive bomb it. Number of hits depends on difficulty. TIP: On easier difficulties this laser can be dodged simply by jumping over the walking thing in time. Stage 4: This stage is not in Simple. The walking thing turns into a spaceship. Dodge its stuff, hit it when it’s white, etc.. Stage 5: The spaceship is destroyed and now you have to dodge lasers, white balls, and expanding lasers for a set amount of time (depends on difficulty). When the counter runs out, you win!
